Ice Makers, Autoclaves and Stills

Problem: These appliances often use water cooling and consume a lot of water.

Solutions: Buy the most efficient ice machines, cycle them off at nights and weekends, or be sure to only use autoclave cooling water when needed, divert clean process water to a second use. Install a water miser on autoclaves.

Benefits: Each modification may save thousands of gallons per year and the associated greenhouse gases created in pumping water from distant sources.

Costs: Some adjustments may have minor costs and immediate payback in energy, water and maintenance (autoclave timers), while energy efficient purchases may have longer paybacks. Water reuse features need to be planned during construction or renovation
