Best Practice Awards Overall Sustainable Design, Best Practice Award Winners

This session includes presentations from winners of the Higher Education Energy Efficiency Partnership Program Best Practices Competition in the category of New Construction, Best Overall Sustainable Design. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo will present on its Center for Sciences building design, UC Davis will present on the Veterinary Medicine 3B project, and Los Angeles Harbor College will present on their LEED™ Gold design for their new Administrative building.

This session includes presentations from winners of the Energy Efficiency Partnership Best Practice awards competition for Lighting Design/Retrofit and Monitoring Based Commissioning (MBCx) projects. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, UC Davis, and San Diego CC will present on projects that implemented emerging technology solutions to lighting applications in areas such as stairwells, parking lots, classrooms, and gymnasiums. CSU San Bernardino and UC Berkeley will present MBCx projects that were implemented on their campuses, such as supply air temperature reset, supply air static pressure reset, time control of the air handlers, and lowering minimum flow settings on supply fans.

Energy Innovative Technologies in Labs and Data Centers

Laboratories and data centers are among the most energy-intensive buildings found on university campuses. Efficiency has often been overlooked because it is falsely assumed that there is very little that can be done in this specific classification of buildings. Case studies from Stanford University and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories will demonstrate how to utilize innovative technologies to reduce energy use in labs and data centers.

Energy Demonstrated Energy Efficient Lighting and HVAC Technologies

Products that improve building environments and reduce energy use have a competitive edge in the quest for Net Zero energy. UC Los Angeles, Sonoma State, and UC Santa Barbara, in partnership with the California Institute for Energy and the Environment, have implemented technologies in energy efficient lighting and HVAC design in an attempt to reduce carbon emissions from energy consumption on campuses. Energy modeling and analysis will also be discussed as integral parts of the Net Zero process.

Food Systems Track

Food Sustainable Dining Service Operations

This session will highlight sustainable food practices in dining service operations and will feature speakers from three UC campuses. UC Los Angeles will discuss how their dining service program has successfully cut waste while maintaining customer satisfaction. UC Davis will present how they have prioritized the procurement and delivery of sustainable foods and a focus on developing innovative methods and processes to procure organic, natural, and locally-grown foods. A presenter from UC Santa Barbara will serve as moderator and introduce an innovative composting program.

Food Sustainable Food Education

Educating people on the importance of sustainable food choices is essential for a successful sustainable food program. The Community Agroecology Network will provide an interactive presentation on how their organization fits into the farm-to-college movement and teaches students to work beyond the scope of the classroom. Representatives from Cal Poly Pomona will discuss a workshop series on gardening techniques and food preparation, including planting, composting, simple garden maintenance practices, watering techniques, basic integrated pest management strategies, and proper harvesting.

Green Building New Construction Track

GBNC A Professor, a Green Building Team, and Life-Cycle Costing

A UC Davis professor will outline the role of an academic client, based on his experience with the exciting Brewery, Winery, and Foot Pilot building. A Stanford presenter will discuss an approach to cost-benefit analysis through an examination of the new Yang and Yamazaki Environment + Energy Building (Y2E2), a lab, a classroom, and an office building. The leaders of the UC San Francisco Green Building Team will discuss institutionalized steps taken within the Capital Programs unit to implement green building requirements on all projects.

GBNC System-Wide Green Building Solutions

In its management of a $5. 7 Billlion construction bond program, the San Diego Community College District is LEEDing the way with a districtwide Green Building Policy and Major Renovation Standards. LACCD will implement a Design-Build effort as a best-value delivery method for maximizing construction processes, which will ultimately reduce project risk and time and produce cost savings for the District. The California State University Program for Environmental Responsibility has also developed an integrated building design approach to be implemented system-wide.

GBOMR LEEDTM EB Case Studies

Documenting sustainable operations for LEEDTM for Existing Buildings, Operations & Maintenance (LEED EBOM) certification elicits the expertise and involvement of numerous campus departments, off-campus professionals, and building occupants. This session will include a brief introduction of the LEED EBOM Rating System and USGBC’s Portfolio Program, followed by presentations on how UC Santa Barbara has approached the greening of its building portfolio, both new and existing, and how UC San Diego has engaged students by inviting them to play key roles on LEED project teams.

Health Care Track

Health Energy Efficiency and Climate Plans in Hospital and Laboratory Settings

Hospitals and other healthcare facilities operate 24 hours per day; therefore, energy consumption and conservation are important issues. This session will examine energy efficiency measures undertaken by an innovative CSU laboratory and both university and public hospitals in order to reduce their impact on the environment. The mechanical engineer from ARUP will explain the energy efficient HVAC systems being designed for the new UCSF Mission Campus hospital. CSU Monterey Bay will discuss their laboratory airflow management system. Broadening the focus, a staff member from San Francisco General Hospital will discuss the facility’s climate plan.

In addition, hear how Kaiser Permanente has implemented a sustainability policy in all of its hospitals and clinics nationwide.

Institutionalizing Sustainability Climate Action Planning

We will explore the ways in which universities are creating and implementing Climate Action Plans. Representatives from UC Los Angeles will discuss how they engaged campus staff, faculty, and students in developing their climate action plan. CSU Northridge will discuss how their newly established Institute for Sustainability has aided in quantifying the campus ecological footprint, including undertaking an inventory of campus trees.

Institutionalizing Sustainability Campus Sustainability Plans

This session will highlight three innovative approaches to Sustainability Action Plans. UC Merced will present on their method of using a simple business plan template and strategic planning process to create its plan. UC San Diego will present its Campus Sustainability Assessment, which benchmarked current performance in all relevant areas of sustainability and developed methods and policies for ongoing tracking of sustainability performance. Pomona College will present on engaging students in a meaningful way in the crafting and implementation of their plan, including use of green caucuses, fellowships, and independent studies courses.

Institutionalizing Sustainability Examples of institutionalizing sustainability throughout all aspects of an organization

A co-founder of STARS (Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System) will give a brief overview. UCLA Housing and Hospitality Services developed a plan with incentives and accountability for comprehensive sustainability goals for all employees. Santa Monica College has implemented an ecological literacy graduation requirement and institutional learning outcome (ILO), and incorporated sustainability into strategic planning. CSU Chico will discuss the barriers encountered, and the pathways that have proven successful, in embedding sustainability into the practices of faculty, staff, and students.

Procurement Track

Procurement Closed Loop Procurement

Examining the entire life cycle of a material or product can serve as a valuable strategy for making procurement decisions. Currently, many procurement comparisons are based on single-attributes, such as quantity of recycled content or recyclability of the material. While these metrics are important, there are additional environmental factors, such as upstream energy consumption or production of toxics. This session will explore alternative perspectives for reducing the environmental impacts along a product’s or mate’s life cycle, and the role of these strategies within procurement.

Procurement Greenwashing

As we’ve watched the green movement balloon over the past few years, there have been great opportunities for new products and services to enter mainstream consumption. Entrepreneurs are capitalizing on the billions consumers are spending within the green economy. However, within the magnitude of environmentally-friendly and healthy products and services, there are many companies who are exploiting the movement to sell products and services that lack true environmental or health benefits. Consumer awareness, regulation, labeling requirements, and or product/ service claim verification have not kept up with the rapid growth of the industry. This session will address the problems with greenwashing and initiatives to reduce greenwashing.

Research and Curriculum Case Studies on Infusing Sustainability into Curriculum

This session will highlight the innovate methods in which sustainability is actively being infused into multiple facets of curriculum. Dr. Kryder will explain how she uses incentives to encourage proposals about sustainability in her advance business writing classes at UC Santa Barbara. Dr. Braun will discuss how Cal Poly SLO presents strategies used to teach sustainability concepts in core, required lecture and laboratory courses in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering courses. Lastly, Stephanie Chenard will explain how her courses at San Francisco CC will give small business owners an overview of the aspects of being green.

Research and Curriculum Applying Transportation Research in Policy and Practice

This session will highlight researchers who have effectively bridged the gap between the solutions being discovered on campus and the policies and practices being implemented throughout the state. Dr. Margulici will discuss the challenges and opportunities in bringing new innovations to Market. Dr. Weinstein Agrawal will then take us into the policy sphere, highlighting best practices from the congressionally established Mineta Transportation Institute (MTI). Lastly, we will hear a presentation from researchers at UC Riverside who used their research to establish a campus car-sharing program, Intellishare, and are collecting information from that program to further new research.

Research and Curriculum Student-Led and Service Learning Curriculum

Learn about ways to encourage students to take an active role in the development of their academic experiences.   Chad Worth, a student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, will discuss the Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Sustainability Council, where students and faculty work to infuse sustainability into curriculum.   The Sustainable Agrifood Systems Fellowship Program, coordinated by the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems at UC Santa Cruz, will present on the development of their program.   Professor Cushing will present on incorporating practical projects into student coursework and teaching students how to develop a project prospectus and to research and implement a project.

Social Equity Equitable Housing and Development Practices

This session will highlight ways to create low cost housing and keep neighborhoods and living spaces green. Los Angeles CCD will present on innovative digital tools that planners can use to help empower the community to re-envision their neighborhood or campus. MBA students at UC Berkeley will present on their plan to collaborate with campus housing cooperatives to create large scale, low cost housing, including housing that fits non-traditional students. Lastly, we will learn about how to address sustainability in a community of renters and landlords.

Social Equity Green Collar Jobs

A commitment to workforce development is growing in importance and provides an opportunity for new solutions. Los Angeles CCD will provide lessons learned from the example of Los Angeles Trade Tech, which, as an early adopter of green workforce development, has integrated sustainability into courses throughout the campus. The Vice Chancellor of Economic and Workforce Development will discuss connecting these curricular initiatives with the well-known green building program in the district. A presenter from the Center for Excellence will highlight their research to determine labor market demand for green jobs.

Student Affairs Student Leadership in Sustainability Curriculum, Funding, and Freshman Orientation

Students are an integral part of campus sustainability. These sessions highlight instances where students have risen as leaders on projects focused on curriculum, funding, and orientation. Students from UC Berkeley will share their experience of implementing a curriculum-based program to improve building efficiency. A student at Earl Warren College at UC San Diego will explain the process of implementing sustainability into freshman orientation. Furthermore, a presenter from CSU Chico will discuss strategies for students to successfully apply for funding from a sustainability fund.

Green Campus Program interns from UC San Diego will discuss their role in securing LEED-EB certification for the Campus Services Complex; Green Campus Program interns from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo will present their efforts to improve the energy use and water efficiency of campus dishwashing and to implement power management software on campus PCs; and a student from CSU Northridge will present on a recently completed, student-designed project that utilizes the waste water and carbon-dioxide by-products of the campus fuel cell to nurture a sub-tropical rainforest habitat on campus.

Waste Reduction and Recycling Rethinking Diversion Rates and Innovations in Waste Management

CSUC will discuss the challenges in scaling up their quickly growing program. Members of Project Zero Waste, which was inspired by a business honors recycling project, will provide a fresh perspective, sharing their analysis and recommendations of CSU Northridge’s AS Recycling Program.

Water Track

Water Emerging Technologies

With the State of California undergoing a major water crisis, universities have had to take an increasingly proactive role in water conservation. Many campuses have utilized emerging technologies to increase water efficiency. UC San Diego will present on Decision-Making using Real-time Observations for Environmental Sustainability (DEMROES), a wireless meteorological station network that supports energy and water conservation. Steven Williams will present on water conservation in brewery and winery practices; and Josiah Raison Cain will present the benefits of combining vegetation on structure with on-site ecological water management.

Water Low-Impact Development

With continual development, California universities’ policies and practices have increasingly reflected concerns about water quality and proper stormwater management. Several campuses have made great progress in this area. CSU Chico will present on their Campus Irrigation Project, designed to increase water and energy conservation. UC Santa Barbara will present on a mitigation project for habitat restoration and stormwater management, as well as strategies to eliminate pesticide use on campus. This session will also highlight, Los Angeles CCD, the Award Winner of the Water Efficiency/Site Water Quality Award.
