Green Building Operations and Maintenance: The LEED™ Implementation Process

This workshop is intended for building owners, operators, and maintenance professionals involved in implementing LEED™ for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance. It walks through the phases of a typical project, using case examples and implementation strategies throughout to reinforce learning and encourage students to apply knowledge to real-life situations.
Prior Knowledge: Familiarity with the LEED™ Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance Rating System a must. USGBC's LEED™ Core Concepts and Strategies course strongly recommended.

Curriculum Development Workshop

Learn about infusing sustainability into curriculum from Jim Pushnik, Professor, CSU Chico. He will go over teaching tools and resources for modifying courses from disciplines across the campus. This presentation is for professors of engineering, business and economics, biology, theater arts, computer science, English, and more.
Participants are encouraged to bring laptop computers, digital cameras, and lunch money.

BeyondFire is the concept of a built environment that produces and manages its own clean energy in a network of Sustainable Utility Nodes (SUN Buildings). BeyondFire advocates becoming harvesters of energy, thus moving beyond the contemporary combustion-based hunter-gatherer paradigm. The 2009 BeyondFire™ workshop will share information about the policies, economics, and technologies that show zero-net energy buildings are both economically viable and crucial to humanity’s future. Furthermore, we will discuss issues of certification and education.
Using LEED™ CI to Green Campus Renovation Projects

The UC/CSU/IOU Energy Efficiency Partnership Program is holding a free workshop for UC and CSU staff on Using LEED™ CI to Green Campus Renovation Projects. This workshop will include the following elements: an overview of the LEED™ CI rating system; a summary of the changes to LEED™ CI and LEED™ in general, initiated by the roll-out of LEED™ v.3; lessons-learned from UC project managers who have worked on LEED™ CI projects over the last year and a half; and a breakout exercise that will allow participants to explore the LEED™ CI checklist in more detail.
The course is geared to the needs of project managers; prior knowledge of and familiarity with LEED™ is highly recommended. Participants should have taken a LEED™ CI Technical Review workshop or will need to review the LEED™ CI Rating Guide prior to the workshop.

Understanding LEED™ Project Costs and Returns

This course, presented by the US Green Building Council, is designed to help those working on a LEED™ project team learn how to handle cost issues to build more environmentally and economically sound projects. Information on construction and life-cycle costs are introduced, using LEED™ certified project case studies and current research data. The course also provides tools to calculate and evaluate the costs and benefits of LEED™ certification and strategies to maximize resource selections.

The annual post-conference Student Convergence allows students the chance to share ideas and engage in discussions about the projects and opportunities related directly to them, reflect on the lessons learned at the conference, and solidify ways to implement these lessons on their own campuses. This year, the convergence will cover topics such as tips for a successful campaign to gain sustainable funding, ways to motivate others to make eco-friendly choices, student involvement in sustainable food systems, and the greening of a Greek System.
