Allen Doyle,
Laboratory Manager, Department of Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology

Allen is a career scientist in marine chemistry and soil ecology and runs an analytical laboratory in the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology. While pursuing high quality research he develops methods to conserve time, energy, water, chemicals and plastics. He was trained in Natural Step sustainability workshops fall, 2005, and he was a member of the UCSB sustainability working group from 2004 to 2006, focusing on sustainable food service.  He advised Residential and Dining Service's administrators on their produce contracts and low energy appliances. Concurrently he developed a framework for sustainable research. The LARS program and LabRATS network were outgrowths from this initial inspiration. Mr. Doyle supervises the laboratory assessments, providing technical expertise and practical context for conservation breakthroughs in the unique pressures and personalities of academic research.

James Tur,
Fifth year, College of Creative Studies, Physics, Intern, LARS Program

James first became interested in environmentalism as a senior in high school when he visited the Hyperion Waste Management Facility in Los Angeles for his AP Environmental Studies class. In 2004 James co-planned a fundraiser to raise money for victims of the tsunami. As a senior at UCSB he joined the LabRATS team and co-wrote a successful grant proposal to fund UCSB’s chemical exchange program and was awarded a spot on the UC Climate Change working group. James looks forward to seeing the LARS program through its 2nd year and hopes to see similar success for the chemical exchange program.

Junior, Mechanical Engineering, Intern, Green Campus, Intern, LabRATS

Son-Lam "Sonny" Hoang is a Green Campus Intern. Green Campus is currently partnered with LabRATS , the two organizations have been working closely together to advance the sustainability efforts of UCSB. Sonny will be a Junior Mechanical Engineering major next year with hopes to enter graduate school as an architecture major. He is also involved in the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity where he holds the position of Public Relations Chair. Sonny is really looking forward to the 2007-2008 year and hopes that we can take some major steps in lowering energy use at UCSB.

Jason Awe
2nd year Pharmacology and Religious Studies major, UCSB, Student Intern, Chemical Exchange Program

Jason is very excited about having the opportunity to rebuild the Chemical Exchange Program at UCSB. He is looking forward to working closely with many professional researchers and professors in implementing a smoother working and more efficient Chemical Exchange Program. Jason has experience in local EPA hazardous waste training in his home town and experience in both chemistry and biology labs. He is extremely excited to see UCSB reduce hazardous waste through advocating for reagent recycling and increasing the awareness of EH&S’s chemical exchange program to all professional scientists on campus.

Dakota Corey,
2008 Masters Candidate, Donald Bren School of Environmental Management, Intern, Mercury Thermometer Exchange Program

Spending her early childhood in an “off the grid” cabin in northern Idaho, Dakota has been interested in sustainability for many years. Upon graduating from Colorado College with a degree in psychology, she (literally) dove head first into sustainability as a senior instructor for Ocean Futures Society’s Catalina Environmental Leadership Program (CELP). There she taught school-aged kids a more sustainable lifestyle while snorkeling, kayaking, and hiking around Catalina Island. In order to provide her students with tangible examples of sustainable living after their return home, she created Pocket Change: A Conscious Consumer’s Buying Guide For Students and Their Families. After four years of CELP instruction, she enrolled at The Donald Bren School of Environmental Management, where she currently specializes in water resources management. As an assistant in UCSB’s environmental health and safety department, she works with air and water quality matters at UCSB . As the mercury thermometer exchange program intern, she will help LabRATS reduce mercury inadvertently entering the environment by encouraging laboratories to replace their mercury thermometers with non-mercury versions.

Marie-Claire Munnelly,
2007 Masters Candidate at the Donald Bren School of Environmental Management and Policy.
President of the Bren Sustainability Committee.

Marie-Claire began her interest in sustainability as a volunteer for environmental trips at James Madison University, aiding and empowering communities nationally and internationally. Before returning to school to study sustainable international energy policy, Marie-Claire was an Oregon State Public Interest Research Group (OSPIRG) campus organizer, an English teacher for the Japanese Embassy in Tokyo, a mentor at a Thai orphanage, and a volunteer doing international environmental conservation work in a plethora of countries.  Marie-Claire volunteers her time to serve as a mentor, editor, and outreach coordinator for the LARS program. Marie-Claire is especially interested in overseeing the creation of a Sustainable Practice Lab Manual that can be shared with many universities as well as organize trainings for other UC schools.

karly

Karly Burch
Alumni, University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) Global Studies and Professional Writing (June 2006), Sustainable Procurement Intern,   UCSB Business Services,   Student Intern,   LARS Program.

Karly began her sustainability career in the winter of 2006 when she participated in a Sustainable Purchasing course of the Education for Sustainability Program (ESLP), which she led the following quarter. She researched the lifecycle of electronic waste and made recommendations to the university for better handling of these products.  Many of her recommendations were included in future RFPs from the UC.  She is also a member of the California Student Sustainability Coalition (CSSC), and has worked closely with the UC statewide sustainable purchasing initiative. Upon graduating, Karly began working as an intern for the UCSB Sustainable Purchasing Coordinator, Scott MacKenzie, and as an intern in the pilot program, Laboratory Assessments for Research Sustainability (LARS).  In her position as a LARS intern, Karly has created many of the original assessment and program documents, and performs the assessments in participating laboratories.
