Purpose
We find it easier to use our minds and our resources for the solution of intellectual problems because we are then freed from the burdens of seeing our interdependence and out indebtedness as persons.- Alan Mermann (1992) Questions and Reflections. New York. Pharos Books
The Laboratory Research And Technical Support (LabRATS ) program at UCSB connects laboratory managers, students, career staff and faculty with each other and with operations staff. We increase resource efficiency and quality of research while using practices that leave the smallest environmental footprint possible. We create a culture of collaboration that values sustainable practices as a top priority in laboratory settings.
It is a fundamental belief of LabRATS participants that most scientists want to use the most pro-active conservation measures possible, and LabRATS connects academic scientists with the sustainability movement. This helps researchers break out of our highly specialized disciplines as so eloquently described by Alan Mermann, a chaplain at Yale Medical School.
