At the UC, CSU, CCC Sustainability Conference
June 21st-24th, 2009
- Student Keynote Speaker (due April 29th)

1) Student Keynote Speakers (due April 29th)
Share the stories of students from your college system (CCC, CSU, UC) with all conference participants in the Tuesday morning keynote session or to nominate someone who you feel would be an inspirational speaker.
- Would be a good representative of their system (CCC, CSU, UC),
- Have experience collaborating with staff and faculty on their campus or system-wide, and
- Have actively worked on a local or statewide sustainability-based initiative/campaign
- Biography (50-100 words)
- Brief description about what you would speak on if selected (100-200 words)
- Recommendation from someone you have worked with on a sustainability project. Please ask them to speak briefly on you as a student leader and as a speaker (100-300 words)
- Recommendation of the nominated speaker. Please ask them to speak briefly on the student as a student leader and as a speaker (100-300 words)
- The nominated speaker will be asked to submit a biography (50-100 words) and brief description about what they would speak on if selected (100-200 words)
One student will be selected from each system (CCC, CSU, UC).
Student Keynote speakers will get free registration to the conference, however they will be expected to cover their own housing and transportation.
2) Student Convergence (due April 29th)
The eighth annual UC/CSU/CCC Student Convergence is a post-conference event at the UC/CSU/CCC Sustainability Conference taking place at UC Santa Barbara on June 24th. It’s an event to highlight innovative work being done in the sustainability field by students, for students.
Who Should Submit?
Individuals who are actively involved in and excited about interesting sustainability efforts being done on their campus to involve students
- Student Initiated Green Funds
- Student Initiatives on Transportation Services
- Student Involvement in Campus Climate Action Plans
- Student Involvement in campus food systems
- Examples of green ideas that have become successful programs
- Ways to stay engaged in the sustainability movement after the conference and implement the lessons learned
Deadline
Presentation proposals due April 29th, 2009
- Presenters should ideally be the person/people who directly created and/or implemented the project.
- Please prepare a minimum of 15 minutes, maximum of 90 minutes for a presentation
- Unfortunately, we are unable to offer speaker or student speaker discounts to the Student Convergence presenters.
Presentation proposals due by April 29th. To submit, download a call for proposal form. Please email Lauren Davis at lauren_davis@umail.ucsb.edu or Dean Guzman at drg@umail.ucsb.edu to officially submit your form.
3) Poster Show (Deadline extended; due April 29th)
Do you have a project that you would like to share with students, staff, and faculty from other campuses? Please consider submitting a proposal for displaying a poster at the conference.
To submit, fill out a poster submittal form and email to kmaynard@geog.ucsb.edu. The form is due by April 29th. The actual poster will not need to be submitted for review prior to the conference.
All faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to submit poster proposals. We also welcome posters by non-profit organizations. Companies and industry representatives interested in poster space should consider becoming a green level sponsor. Please note: Poster submitters will not get a discounted registration fee for attending the conference; they must register as full participants and pay their own registration fee, housing, and transportation costs. For information on scholarships please see scholarships and volunteers.
4) Volunteer Opportunities (spaces almost full)
As a volunteer for the conference you will directly interact with individuals from many backgrounds who share a vision of maintaining Sustainability. Help us excel and succeed in this vision by becoming a volunteer.
If you are interested in getting free entry to the conference by volunteering you must volunteer for at least three five-hour shifts at the conference. To sign up, please fill out the volunteer application form and email it to kmaynard@geog.ucsb.edu.
There are very few volunteer spots still available, so please sign up soon!
5) Biking to the conference
This year we will be offering a program for students to bike to the conference. Take in the California scenery and get together with other bike enthusiast to join in on an effort to green the conference. We’ll provide locations to stay and routes to travel while all you need to do is grab a bike, get on the road, and go! Cyclists from all across California are welcomed. Bring all of your friends and make it a memorable trip you will remember for the rest of your lives. There’s no better way to get to a sustainability conference than to travel sustainably!
