Scholarships
If you are interested in pursuing a scholarship, please fill out an application [PDF] and email it to turningthetide@geog.ucsb.edu. All students will have an option of free housing for Sunday through Tuesday nights regardless of scholarship status.
Students arriving on Saturday will need to pay for housing or request alternate housing by emailing turningthetide@geog.ucsb.edu. If you are interested in attaining a scholarship, please start by reading the strategies for fundraising below. Scholarships are limited and we prefer to give scholarships to those that have made some efforts on their own to raise funding. We are happy to assist in this process in terms of offering fundraising tips and example proposals.
Scholarships will be available starting March 1st, when registration opens. Please check back closer to this time for a scholarship application. Priority for scholarships will go to those in financial need and those who have made efforts to raise funds on their own in other ways. Students are not guaranteed a scholarship; however, all students will have an option of free housing regardless of scholarship status.

Student Housing
Student housing will be free and will be staying on campus in the dorms. This is part of the subsidized registration available.
Strategies for Fundraising
For Students...
- Ask academic departments. Start with department chairs, especially the chair in your own department. Write a one-page proposal describing why the conference is important for your academic career and how you will bring the information back to the department. Depending on the campus, each department chair can give between $50-$500.
- Ask your local Associated Students Chapter. Check the Associated Students Main Office on your campus for details.
- Ask friends and family to sponsor your trip. If ten friends give you $5, you will have already paid your registration fee.
For Non-Students...
- Ask your employer to sponsor your trip, Let us know if you need background information on how your professional organization has supported sustainability initiatives (a great arguing point for a proposal).
- Ask friends and family to sponsor your trip. Every $5 donation counts.
