Monday 10:45

Join Professor David Cleveland in defining what is organic, local, small-scale, and sustainable. How can we create policies and practices that take into account the research on local small-scale agriculture? Cindy Douglas will then share her experience teaching students about local agriculture and their role in the food system through the use of the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo’s Organic Farm. Amie Frisch will tie up the session by discussing her work as the student foods coordinator of the CSU Sustainable Foods campaign and how she has applied her understanding of sustainable food systems to changing the operations of CSU dining commons.

Curriculum and Research Mapping Sustainable Curriculum
Monday 2:00 pm

Tom Kimmerer, Executive Director of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) will set the tone for this session with a broad view of what the landscape of sustainability within curriculum and research in higher education looks like. From there, participants and speakers will explore research tools and methods to determine what determines a course on sustainability, how do we assess how far higher education has come in terms of addressing sustainability, and what are the barriers to get there? Cal Poly San Luis Obispo conducted a survey to assess student interest and faculty teaching of sustainability in design programs, Kristina Miller, CSU Chico, evaluated sustainability in curriculum throughout community colleges in California, and UCSB developed a campus-wide assessment tool via surveys and interviews this past year, evaluating both the degree to which sustainability was included across and within disciplines, this survey was part of a larger process of establishing indicators to assess the success of our campus sustainability plan.

Energy: Time to Get Serious
Tuesday 8:30

Carbon-neutrality is a taller order than many people realize. It is two orders of magnitude more difficult than the Policy on Sustainable Practices UC has been pursuing. This requires far more than simply redoubling our efforts. Wealthy universities are taking the easy way out by buying emissions credits rather than taking direct actions to reduce or offset their carbon emissions. Although emissions credits will no doubt play some role in a carbon-neutral UC, our primary intent should be direct action. We need to think big in terms of plans, investments, funding strategies, new business concepts, and comprehensive efforts, because the goal is immense. It may be the most challenging goal we ever face in our career.

Transportation: Campus Bike Planning
Tuesday 8:30

The bicycle is one of the most efficient and sustainable forms of transportation ever invented. However, bicycling is often marginalized in today's transportation system. The presenters in this session will discuss how to develop programs, plans and policies to facilitate bicycle commuting to university campuses. Among the issues discussed will be coordinating campus bicycle plans with city plans, developing a bicycle program, and taking strides to improve bicycle safety.

Speakers:

Richard Demerjian, Director, Campus and Environmental Planning, UC Irvine
Matt Benjamin, Associate, Alta Planning + Design

Transportation: Tackling Bigfoot; Carbon Footprint of Transportation
Tuesday 1:30 pm

The burning of fossil fuels and the release of carbon into the atmosphere is changing the climate. Colleges and Universities across the country are developing greenhouse gas inventories to help quantify their contribution and make recommendations for action. Transportation is a major producer of campus GHGs, but the data is often difficult to find and harder still to interpret. This panel will discuss how to measure the carbon footprint of transportation, what data to collect, various ways to organize it, and how to use the data to make decisions.

Speakers:

Daniel Salazar, Student, Geography, CSU Chico
Sherry Lewis, Associate Director, UCLA Transportation Services, Fleet and Transit
Nicholas Linesch, Intern, UC Office of the President, Student, Civil Engineering, UC Davis

Water and Landscaping

Water and Landscaping: Clean Water Programs
Monday 10:45

When you think utilities, you think: water, sewer, and electricity. The Clean Water Utility at UCSD encompasses water and sewer. These two utilities have significance to the academic community and campus operations. Both are regulated and always in need of renovation. Deferred maintenance is a routine funding mechanism for repairs, but typically it is a fix on an “as needed” basis and does not address the regulatory requirements. To get out of the permanent Band-Aid, a Clean Water Utility can provide a framework for funding repairs, improvements, equipment, compliance, and staff.

Speakers:

Marty Laporte, Manager, Water Resources and Environmental Quality, Utilities Department, Stanford University
Julie Hampel, Manager, Environmental Affairs, UC San Diego
Valerie Fanning, Environmental Compliance Officer, Environment, Health and Safety department, UC San Diego
Stephanie Barger, Founder and Executive Director, Earth Resource Foundation

Bill Lekas, Energy Manager, Physical Plant, San Diego State University

Water and Landscaping: Water Conservation & Metering
Tuesday 8:30

The Calsense central control irrigation system is a tool used at SDSU. It is an important water conservation device utilizing weather data and flow metering to track water usage and conserve water resources on campus. Each irrigation controller communicates via phone lines, radio waves or ethernet connection to send and receive data on a schedule or at random times. There are also many other options available, i.e. (ET gauges, wind gage, rain bucket, moisture sensors, radio remotes) it can even turn lighting on and off through a schedule. With water resources becoming more expensive and cities and states enacting legislation to budget water usage the use of central control irrigation systems should be the first step in conserving water and money.

Speakers:

Tom Beland, Assistant Director of Custodial and Grounds, UC Santa Barbara
Carl Decker, Project Manager, Residential Operations, UC Santa Barbara
