- Recycle batteries and other e-waste
- Change your computer settings for energy-efficiency
- Print on both sides of your paper
- Sign up for the TAP program
- Re-use water bottles and coffee mugs
- Use low or no VOC (volatile organic compound) emission products for items such as furniture, carpet, paint, cleaning reagents, and marker pens and eliminate chemicals with toxic fumes or odors. Non-toxic alternatives are free by emailing krispi@umail.ucsb.edu
- Use task lighting where appropriate; only light the portion of the room that you will be working in, and only use overhead lights when light from the windows is insufficient. Turn off all unnecessary lights when leaving a room.
- Enable all energy-saving features on all applicable appliances and purchase energy star certified appliances when possible.
- Replace Incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL)
- Eliminate strip heaters; keep thermostats at 68 degrees F (heating) and 74 degrees F (cooling)
- Buy environmentally preferable and socially responsible products and services when appropriate and keep track of such purchases to monitor progress and establish goals. Prioritize third-party certified products (examples: Greenseal, EnergyStar, Fair Trade) and products that are durable, reusable, and made of high recycled content. More information on purchasing
- Request reusable, recyclable, or biodegradable packaging and packing products, return no longer needed packaging to UCSB mail services. Your department can request that mail services pick extra packaging materials up when they drop off the mail.
- Purchase remanufactured toner cartridges, and recycle your old toner cartridges at one of the building recycling clusters.
- Avoid using chemicals to treat pest problems, instead call Facilities Management or EHS and they will implement Integrated Pest Management practices.
- Pick up free used furniture at Furniture Services on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Need something for your apartment or house? You can pick up something for personal use too for a pretty low fee.
- Bring your lunch in a reusable container instead of a throwaway Styrofoam carton.
- Shrink margins and reduce font size if possible on your documents to save paper.
- Transmit documents electronically when you can. When you want to print something out, only print out what you’ll need.
